Atheemom’s Dried Pears !! ! ! ! ! "
1. Choose fresh pears that are ripe and ready to eat.
2. Peel, cut in half length-wise and remove core, stem and hard fiber above and below the core of each pear half. (check online for the pear corer tool…it makes this step very easy!)
3. Lay the peeled and cored pear halves on cutting board with flat (cut) sides down and using a very sharp knife, cut into 1/4 inch thick slices (cut horizontally or vertically).
4. Immediately place the slices on a food dryer tray and repeat this process until the entire tray is covered with pear slices.
5. Immediately put the filled tray in your food dryer. (It’s a good idea to get out your food dryer and turn it on, so it’s warm when the first tray of fruit is ready to start drying.)
6. Work with one pear at a time, completing all steps as quickly as you can. This prevents the fruit from turning brown before it begins drying.
7. Your food dryer instructions will suggest the amount of time needed to dry pears; however, that time can vary a lot, so for your first batch or two, note what time the last tray of slices are put into the food dryer. Then, monitor the process until the fruit is dried as you want it to be, check the clock and you will know how many hours it took.
8. The slices will be a golden color when finished drying and will have a chewy, but not crisp or hard texture. If you happen to over-dry fruit, remove the slices from the tray, put them in a big bowl on the counter, stir occasionally and let them absorb moisture from the air in the kitchen.
*9. Store dried fruit in zip lock freezer bags or glass jars. If wanting to " store longer than a month or two, put in the freezer.
