The Rule of 3: 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months
*Three days for kitty to decompress. They’ll likely be stressed, overwhelmed & not fully ‘themselves’. They may be very wary, hide, not eat, & commonly have diarrhoea.
*Three weeks to get used to the people, the house & it’s routine. Some ‘true colours’ may start to show during this period. This is the time to step up as leader to teach some rules & boundaries.
*Three months for them to feel comfortable & secure in their new home. Bonds are forming and glimpses of what regular life with kitty will becoming apparent. For some kitties the transition is longer.
We encourage people to adopt two kittens together. Why two? Many reasons! Kittens are young, active, and playful. When they have a play partner, they expend that energy on each other. When they don't, well, then they want to expend it with you... usually at about 3 a.m.! And, if they're alone, their natural impulse to wrestle and play-bite does not have an outlet, and is instead aimed at you (which you may not appreciate). In addition, they can keep each other company when you're not home. Having a companion keeps them from being lonely, from being scared, from being bored when their human is not available.
Kittens learn from their mothers and littermates, and that education is necessary for healthy social development. Separating a kitten from its mother is often required for adoption, but taking a kitten away from its littermates can delay his development emotionally, socially and physically. Kittens who remain with a littermate or a similarly-aged companion are healthier, happier and better socialized. It's a myth that cats won't bond with their humans if they have feline companionship. Of course, there are always some cats that seem to be less interested in human company, but in general, having a companion kitten makes them more social and less solitary with their humans as well.
And, because kittens keep each other occupied, play with each other, and keep each other company, a second kitten is not actually twice as much work. However, it is twice the laughter and joy!
Now, obviously this doesn't mean we require you to adopt two kittens every time. Some kittens do seem to be more solitary than others, or perhaps you already have a young active cat who could use a companion. But if you do not have other pets, or only have an older, sedentary cat who probably will not appreciate kitten-y attempts to play during their naptime, please consider adopting a second kitten. We promise you that it will make your life, and theirs, much richer!

Also... these are former fosters Tesla & Keke.
These are the CCAC kittens, Boyce, Allie, Mifflin & Weston. (CCAC = Community College of Allegheny County) My neighbor & rescue buddy Amber is fostering them now. Her dad and his co workers at CCAC rescued them. They were tiny & covered in fly eggs. They went out and got kitten food and cleaned most of the fly eggs off of them and brought them to Amber & her mom, who finished cleaning them up and made a safe space for them. This pic is when they first came in, covered in food. Also... Amber's dad helped us rescue the spicy kittens a few years ago. They were feeding their mom and Amber trapped her, spayed her and tagged her, then released her. It took a while, but we tracked her kittens they all got adopted. Her dad and his co-workers are really taking care of the cats out there!
HI! I’m Bowser! I’m 8 months old and not to brag or anything but I’m pretty much the perfect kitten! I love to play with all the toys. If you want to play, I’m in! Laser pointer, springs, ball tower, catnip toy, wand toy? I just want to play!! The cat tree and looking out the window are awesome! But… I also love to be picked up and held or brushed! I purr all the time. I love to snuggle! I LOVE to sit on your lap! They call me a lap cat! But I’m also a bed cat! I love to sleep with you! It’s my favorite place to sleep! I also love to play in boxes… or take a nap on top of the fridge. I really loved playing with the Tea Kittens before they got adopted! There’s not much else to say, I’m perfect! I do need to have a kitty playmate, so you should have a playful cat or cats at home to play with me. Your cats should be friendly and confident! I play with 7 adult cats here in GenPop, plus all of the Tea kittens before they got adopted. Did I mention I love to play?? I think kids are cool and I’ve never met a dog, but I feel like we could also be pals, just don’t rush it. Oh… they said I also have to tell you I’m neutered and up to date on vaccines. What are you waiting for?? Apply now! I’m too awesome to not be adopted quickly!
This little fam is staying with me. Mama Rosalina went back to her original foster, since it's harder for me to have adults running around. Meet Yoshi (orange male), Tingle (buff male), Bowser (gray male) and Zelda (tortie female). They were born on January 29 and they look bigger on the cam then they actually are.
Cookie MOMster or Cookie for short. When she came in and I posted a picture of her, someone immediately drew a Cookie Monster face around her cute spots. You can’t un-see that, so she became Cookie and it totally suits her. Cookie was living outside and one day showed up to the feeding station with big, exposed nipples. Uh oh! That meant she had kittens someplace. It took a few weeks, but we finally found them when they were about 5 weeks old. We scooped them up and used them to trap her. They stayed together in the foster care, until her kittens were old enough to be weaned, then she moved to her own room. Cookie has her own Instagram! You can follow her here... https://www.instagram.com/cookiemomstercat/
The Cookie Kitties' mom was a community cat who showed up extra nipply one day. So, we knew she had kittens out there someplace. It took a few weeks of searching, but finally a neighbor called to say they had kittens in their shed! Then we rescued mom and all five of her babies!
This big floof is Zorro! He used to be a community cat, living outside in the neighborhood, visiting all the ‘feeders’ for food. He was trapped in the spring, neutered, vaccinated, and released back outside. He wasn’t ready to be an indoor cat at the time. Over the summer, he began to trust his caretakers and allowed them to pet him. He liked it! So, they gave him the chance to be an indoor cat and he loves it! Now he doesn’t mind being picked up, after he gets to know you. He doesn’t love to be held, but he also doesn’t hate it! The caretakers’ foster rooms are all full… so he lives in the basement/mancave with the man. Zorro is a chatty guy. He’ll let you know when he wants your attention or dinner. He really loves to be petted & brushed. He rolls over on his back and loves to have his chest rubbed, but don’t venture down to a belly rub; that’s a trap! He loves the wand toys, turbo track scratcher and chasing jingle balls & springs. He also loves to look out the window. Zorro LOVES friendly cats. His ideal home would have at least one friendly cat pal.
Mama Morena (tabby) is a very sweet girl, but also very shy. She LOVES to play, but was kind of afraid of all of the cats in Gen Pop (my cats). Since she and her kitten Olive got along great, I decided they should be adopted together, so that Morena would have a built in friend no matter where she went. Olive would be great anyplace, but she was also happy to be with her mom.
Now named! Mama Morena (after my favorite pizza place) Sausage, Pepperoni, Mushroom & Olive. A neighbor called because they heard kittens under the deck. My community cat partner & I rushed over to collect the kittens and trap mom. Poor mom was eating pizza crust and garbage from the trash can in front of the house she was thrown out of. No more trash for you mama... and your babies will never eat trash!
You won't see them on the camera often, because they currently have the run of the house. Glenda is about 10 months old and was one of the formerly Hissy Kittens. She was extra shy and needed extra time to be learn to live inside with people. Cider is about 6 months old and one of the Holiday Beverage Kittens. When her siblings were adopted, it became clear that Cider & Glenda were best friends. Now they are available to be adopted together. They are both super sweet, lovey girls who love to play! Their ideal adopters will be patient and allow these shy girls to come around at their own pace. Glenda LOVES cats and would be happy to have other playmates. Cider wants to to be the boss and might seem a bit surly with other cats at first, but does come around in a few weeks and becomes friends.
Coquito & Eggnog were adopted, but seemed to be too timid in their new home. The adopter is upset that they're not bonding them and thinks it's best to return them.
The adopter said that Eggnog is a snuggler and will happily lay on laps or bodies. Coquito likes and seeks out attention, but does not like to be held. They both LOVE to play. Seems like the reason they were returned is they startle easily. They had only been in the home for about a month and were still becoming accustomed to the sounds and smells of the home. This is a normal behavior in that time frame.
They will be here in the foster room to decompress for a few days. I might let them explore Gen Pop after that. We'll have to see how they do.
Cider is in GenPop with Miss Glenda and enjoying exploring the house.
I guess now their backstory is that these shy little strays have been returned for being too shy.
These are The Hissy Kitties!
UPDATE! Teddi & Ana are available for adoption. They are still shy, and will need a patient adopter. They come around quickly, but might be timid out in the house at first. Miss Glenda is super sweet and is definite coming around. She doesn't like to be picked up or held, but seeks out pets and loves to be brushed. I LOVE her!!!!
I'm not sure exactly where they came from. I believe they were trapped when small and it was expected that they'd come around and be friendly. So far, that hasn't happened. So they came to me for a little change of scenery and to hopefully figure out that living with humans isn't so bad. If they don't come around, they will get ear-tips and go back to where they came from. They have a great caretaker and will be well taken care of. So that's not the worst thing that could happen. The worse thing would be making them stay inside, where they are miserable and scared. Fingers crossed that we can convert them!
We're the Spicy Kittens! They named us that because we had fiery little attitudes while they tried to catch us! Wanna know our story? Yes? Cool! So... this guy was feeding our mom and he wanted a better life for her. She's always lived outside and has no desire to be confined to a house, so he figured, at least I can get her spayed & vaccinated, so she has an easier, healthier life! He trapped her and a nice lady brought her to be spayed. While that was happening, they noticed mom was lactating (that's how she feeds us!!) So... the nice lady and her friends wanted to find us ASAP! They went out and got a Tile tracker and attached it to a breakaway collar and let mom go. At first she them on a wild goose chase, she figures outside is great for her, it's great for us... but luckily, the lady didn't give up. She knew we'd have a much better life inside. So it took a couple of weeks... and the lady had her friends helping her look... they tramped through the mud, in the rain, in hail, through bushes, thorns, in people's yards, under decks... they looked everywhere, but we're getting bigger, and mum let us start running around! Then, one of the neighbor's saw us and kept watching until the lady and her friends could get to us. We had a cool den under some old thrown away stairs, a whole bunch of lawn clippings, an old pumpkin patch, and of course some thorns! Well... one of the ladies was not scared off by any of that and just started taking our den apart!! Then they started grabbing us and threw us in a plastic cage! We didn't like that all... we tried hissing and swatting at them, but they just laughed and said we were cute. Then we went to 'inside' where we spent the night a warm, dry soft place and one of the lady's friends gave us some yummy dinner. We kinda like her, but we can't let on, so we're still being spicy with. We don't think we can keep this up for long though! The ladies made spicy names for us. They're calling us Cholula, Tapatio, and Tabasco. So that's our story!!
Hi! We're The Beer Kittens!! We got named The Beer Kittens because Spryte joked that she brought The Spicy Kittens for a check up and ended up with a six pack to go! We are six (of 18!!!) kittens pulled from a shed in a TNR project!! It's fun to see our smaller siblings with other . We are all the biggest of our litters from the shed... but our smaller siblings went to other fosters. Even though we're probably from two or three litters... we're family!
Aka... Jadey... aka Jadey Lane... Sadly my beautiful Jadey Lane passed away. She had Congestive Heart Failure. She knew she was loved and spent most of the last half of her life in my lap. You are missed sweet girl. This beauty is the mama to The Mushroom Kittens! She's shy and so sweet!! You won't see sweet Jade on camera... she's running around in GenPop. She really enjoys sitting with me while I watch TV. Jadey would do best as an only cat, but would probably be ok with a very chill cat. Also, no small children for Jade. As it turns out, Jadey has asthmatic lungs. What does that mean? It's possible she could have an asthma attack. She came off the streets, with newborn babies and pneumonia. Treating her pneumonia is how her asthmatic lungs were discovered. She's been with me since June 2020 and has not had an asthma attack. What does this mean for you? Most likely, nothing! If you adopt Jade, we will send an inhaler, little kitty mask & some prednisone. She will probably never need it. We send it with her only in an abundance of caution. We'll also send her chest xrays to your vet. If you want a petite, sweet cat, with the most beautiful eyes, on your lap every night, Jadey is DEFINITELY your girl!
Meet Mimi her kittens, The Filipino Food Kittens, were born on 1/27/21. She's a very sweet mama and she'll be going back to her home. She was only in foster to care for her babies and be spayed. She's six years old and thankfully, can will the rest of her life kitten-free! She will be missed!

This magnificent bastard is totally available to be your new best friend!! He goes by the name, Octavio. He'll hang out on the couch with you while you eat Chinese food and watch Netflix... he'll cuddle up next to you, while you sleep and keep you warm. He whole-heartedly loves to be picked up and cuddled. He doesn't even mind if you have one or two chill cats like him. He's around 5 years old, so none of that kitten nonsense. But don't worry, he still loves to play, he just won't irritate the crap out of you begging for attention! If this is the cool cat you've been looking for... don't waste any time... If you're in the Pittsburgh area... apply for Octavio today! TOO LATE!!! He has an awesome furever home!!
This beautiful tiny girl is mama to The Energy Kittens. Even though Growly has always lived outside, she's a very sweet kitty! She growls in a new situation, but warms up almost immediately. Hence the name. She's not on camera anymore, because her kittens are weaned and she just lives in my house to gain some weight. She'll be spayed soon and then be up for adoption. She LOVES my other cats. She runs to greet them when she sees them. Some are more welcoming than others, but she definitely enjoys other feline companionship.
The Energy Kittens were born outside in kind of a hoarding situation, where her care takers, enjoy having kittens running around.

Hi! We're Bangers & Mash! We were living in a warm house with our mom and dad, and a nice girl. Then on a cold, wet Saturday, the girl's dad threw us outside!! We didn't know what 'outside' was, but we didn't like it! A neighbor saw us, and called for help. The nice trapper lady came to save us and couldn't find us, because our girl snuck us back into the house. Her dad wouldn't let her keep us, so the nice trapper lady, brought us to a foster mom. She seems pretty nice too. We have a nice warm place to stay, lots of food and toys! The nice trapper lady is having mom & dad fixed. That means we won't have any more brothers & sisters. But for right now... we're playing and growing until it's time to find our furever home! I'm the little white & tabby guy and my name is Bangers! Mash is my cute, tortie sister!
This little guy came to us from Pittsburgh C.A.T. named Fox, but since we have a resident Foxy, we call him Mulder. He was only supposed to be with us for a month until he gets some dental surgery. (notice his crooked little smile) He is just the sweetest little cat and stole my heart as soon as he was released into gen pop! He's still waiting for surgery... but he will definitely be foster failed!!
My second litter of fosters arrived the day after my first litter was adopted! Pittsburgh C.A.T. contacted me about taking this litter. They all came to me with eye infections. For Neon & Xenon they cleared up quickly when they were big enough to be spayed and neutered, went to a pet store and were adopted immediately. Radon & Argon have eye issues and are still with me... but we've grown quite attached to them and we will be adopting them as soon as I find out their eye situations are sorted out. Their eyes will most likely always look a little wonky. They are our first official Foster Fails.
This was my first batch of foster kittens. We trapped them in my neighborhood and they're named in the order I opened the traps! I got them into the Foster to Surrender Program at Animal Friends. As soon as they were big enough to be spayed & neutered, Animal Friends takes them to be put up for adoption. Luckily, a neighbor adopted Alpha and she lives a few doors down from me. I get to see regular Facebook updates about her!
I foster through Pittsburgh C.A.T. You can learn more about them on their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pittsburghcat
